A warehouse dock is the bridge used to move product from the warehouse to the customer. Therefore, it’s important to any business that it is safe, sturdy and reliable. Beyond the basics, which upgrades for the dock should you choose?

3 Upgrades for the Warehouse Dock

Hydraulic dock leveler

A hydraulic dock leveler is a push-button solution whereas a standard mechanical dock leveler requires manual activation with a pull chain. One button touch raises the dock leveler, extends the lip and places the platform on the trailer floor. Another touch closes the leveler. Moving to a hydraulic dock leveler doesn’t require a new equipment investment. The upgrade can be accomplished with a hydraulic conversion kit.

Hydraulic dock levelers tend to be more reliable and last longer as compared to mechanical versions that have chains and springs which move out of adjustment. Employee ergonomics also benefit with the elimination of bending and pulling a chain.

Vehicle Restraint with Light Communication System

The most common accident at the warehouse dock is an unscheduled departure by the semi-driver. Forklift operators can find themselves at risk for falling off the dock or being trapped inside a moving trailer.

Vehicle restraints are a major upgrade to wheel chocks, connecting to and securing the semi. The restraint prevents a driver from moving into gear and eliminates the creeping that occurs from repetitive moment in and out of the trailer. Adding lights to the vehicle restraint further increases communication with a semi-driver. The outdoor light placement is within the driver’s vision, flashing red for “stop” and green for “go”. Lights on the indoor control box also informs the forklift operator if the restraint is safely engaged.

Dock Seals & Shelters

Dock seals & shelters are a cost-efficient upgrade and are compatible to most trailers. With placement on docks and the exterior of the building, seals & shelters help to lower energy costs by preventing loss of warm or cool air from inside the building. Employees are also protected from weather conditions and insects are deterred from entering the warehouse.
