Enhancing Forklift Stability

Providing forklift safety training to operators is one of the best practices to decrease accidents involving employees and product. However, even with training, operators will find themselves in dangerous situations. 

Toyota recognizes this reality and since 1999 has equipped their forklifts with the System of Active Stability (SAS). This system includes an active control rear stabilizer and active mast function controller.

Active Mast Function Controller System

This system uses patented technology to detect factors that may cause a forklift to become unstable. It activates two key features to help prevent tip overs: forward tilt control and rear tilt speed control. The forward tilt control automatically adjusts the mast’s forward tilt based on load weight and height to prevent spilling or tipping forward. Similarly, the rear tilt control reduces reverse tilt speed to minimize the risk of tipping backward or losing unsecured loads.

Active Control Rear Stabilizer System

Toyota’s SAS detects conditions that can cause lateral instability in a forklift. When these conditions are sensed, the system locks the Swing Lock Cylinder on the rear steer axle, transforming the forklift’s stability from a triangular to a rectangular footprint. This adjustment reduces the risk of a tip over and enhances overall stability.
