Choosing between a reach truck and a stand-up rider forklift can impact productivity and space efficiency in your warehouse. Explore the key differences, advantages, and ideal applications for each to make the best choice for your operation.
Imagine a warehouse setup where reach trucks are used effectively in narrow aisles. However, with plans to begin loading and unloading trailers within the next six months, a question arises: are reach trucks still the best choice, or is a different type of forklift needed to handle these new requirements?
For narrow aisle applications, reach trucks offer a clear advantage. Operators can perform work in aisles as small as 9-1/2 ft; however, they are built for indoor operation and will not perform well for loading and unloading trailers. The reach truck’s low under-carriage clearance, small load wheels, and extended wheelbase can prevent it from moving smoothly over a dock plate. Continuous jarring from crossing dock plates can also put its electrical components at risk.
A dock-to-stock application is ideally handled with a Stand-Up Rider Forklift. It can often be found in general warehouse, beverage and freezer/food storage applications. This forklift has the ability to maneuver small aisles as small as 10-1/2 ft and handle up to a 4,000 lb capacity.
The Stand-Up Rider Forklift is ideal for navigating tight spaces and is well-suited for handling custom loads. Like the reach truck, its convenient “on and off” design helps operators maintain productivity.
