LIFO pallet racking (Last In First Out) is an ideal storage system when:
- The product is not date sensitive
- Pallet rows can be dedicated to one product
- The pallets used in operation are consistent and good quality
Push Back Racking
Bulk stacking is efficient, but pallet racking is often implemented because soft packing and fragile materials make it vulnerable to damage. When utilizing LIFO, push back racking is recommended. Push back racking allows the forklift operator to approach the front of the rack and use the power of the forklift to “push back” the pallet in the first position. The system utilizes carts, trolleys or gravity rollers to smoothly reposition the pallets.
Because the forklift operator is not required to access the pallets from both ends, this racking creates maximum storage space even when built in front of a wall or an area with tight access. Basic systems are extremely cost efficient per pallet position.
Drive-In or Drive-Thru Racking
Drive-in or drive-thru racking requires a forklift operator to drive in or through the racking to position the pallet. ProLift’s Storage & Handling Specialist, Thomas Rademaker, asks two main questions when quoting the racking system – Will your forklift need a modification? And, do operators practice safe driving?
“When a forklift operator drives into a drive-in or drive-thru racking system, precision is key to avoid damage. Visibility is limited by the forklift and racking,” states Thomas. “Besides avoiding impact to the product and racking, the operator must commit to the correct placement of pallets. Pallets left in random positions destroy the benefit of LIFO space utilization.”
Based on aisle widths, forklift modifications might be required. “Forklift overhead guards and load back rests are often adjusted. It’s important you work with a preferred forklift dealer and equipment manufacturer,” notes Thomas.
